Handbooks
Handbooks: First Aid & Crypto Rhythm
Two handbooks that guide your practice. When you have a clear compass in front of you, it is easier to stay on the path. That way it stays clear what you are working on today and where it leads tomorrow, from the basics to confident playing.
Help for those moments when you practice a lot, but progress feels slow.
What do I most often overlook in drum practice?
Sometimes you don’t run out of energy — the path simply gets foggy. The mini self-check below helps you orient yourself and see why and where progress most likely leaks.
- Listening is sometimes not precise enough. If you don’t hear what you are playing, it is harder to correct it. Aim for clean sound and evenness.
- Practice sometimes doesn’t have a clear plan. It helps to set goals and split practice into blocks, such as technique, coordination, rhythms and songs.
- Too much random playing. More is not necessarily better. Choose one block and practice it for 5 to 10 minutes. Focus adds up faster than a long “walk” through everything.
-
Just 5 min of focused practice per day on things you struggle with gives you a small advantage.
After one year, you are ahead of the competition by 30 hours and 25 min.
After 10 years, that is more than 300 hours, which means 38 extra “8-hour training sessions”! - Tempo requires more patience. Start slower, with a metronome and counting. Raise the tempo gradually.
- The weaker side likes to stay behind. Include and “engage” your weaker hand and foot. The body balances itself and the load is distributed.
- Finger warm-up doesn’t get done. “Cardio for fingers” and stretching reduce tension and the risk of injuries.
- Dynamics still wobble a bit. The difference between accented and unaccented strokes is the key to confidence and musicality.
First Aid
A clear and structured exercise program that you can use immediately directly on the kit.
In the handbook, you work on:
- practice organization with short-term and long-term goals
- tempo and transitions between different note values
- coordination of hands and feet
- coordination and transfer to the kit (ostinatos and their use in songs)
digital download • printed version
Crypto Rhythm
A continuation of the first handbook with systems and matrices for better control of the whole body (hands and feet) and examples of use in songs.
In the handbook, you work on:
- matrices and systems for independence/interdependence between hands and feet
- pyramid exercises for coordination and symmetry
- dynamics and precision (accents, control, stability)
- examples of use in songs and solos

What you get in the handbooks (in practice)
Instead of dry notation, you get a system with a clear practice structure that helps you reach better control and dynamics faster. You notice it yourself on the kit, and later the rest of the band does too.
- what matters in practice (listening, focus, consistency, patience)
- warming up and stretching fingers to help prevent injuries
- systems you can combine (pyramids, matrices, ostinatos) for hands and feet
- metronome and counting as helpers for timing and precision
- dynamics (accents, ghost notes) for what gives music meaning
- examples of using ideas in grooves and solos
Why this works
Systems are not an end in themselves, but they guide learning in a meaningful way. Honestly, I don’t believe in magic tricks. I believe in a good plan that does not wear you down and exhaust you, but makes progress possible within two weeks. This is my S.O.S. approach: less thinking, more playing. Both handbooks were created from knowledge, insights and ideas that saved me years of guessing how, how much and what.
That is exactly why they are adapted to work in “real” life too, not only in an ideal schedule.
